Section 8 Voucher Program

The Section 8 Program is a Federal program that was developed to provide housing assistance to low income families and individuals, including the elderly and disabled, to rent in the private market. Participants find thier own housing, which can include single-family homes, duplexes, and apartments.  All housing must meet Housing Quality Standards and reasonable rent requirements.

Eligibility is based on the annual gross income of the family and is limited to US Citizens and specified categories of non-citizens who have eligible immigration status.

Participating families pay 30% of monthly income for thier rent, and the remaining difference in the cost of actual rent is paid directly to the landlord by the Fayetteville Housing Authority.

The Fayetteville Housing Authority is authorized to assist 507 families at a time in the Section 8 program, and a waiting list of eligible applicants is maintained.  The waiting time for a voucher varies, but is usually 18 to 24 months.
